Carmen at Austin Opera

Don José, a young soldier, falls deeply in love with Carmen after arresting her for starting a fight. Swayed by her allure, he lets her escape and eventually deserts the army to be with her. However, Carmen’s love is fleeting—she soon grows tired of José and becomes involved with Escamillo, a confident and famous bullfighter.

As Carmen embraces her freedom and follows her heart, Don José becomes increasingly jealous and desperate. Unable to accept her rejection, his love turns into obsession. The opera ends in tragedy when Don José confronts Carmen outside the bullring and, in a fit of rage and heartbreak, murders her.
